After the Phil Leaves, the Hollywood Bowl Plays by Different Rules

"No Glass/Cans/Alcohol or controlled substances allowed on entry." That line is printed on every Hollywood Bowl show from October 8 through November 21, 2026, starting with Empire of the Sun on opening night of the fall run and ending with Steve Lacy on the Saturday before Thanksgiving week. The LA Phil's 2026 Bowl season, as announced in the venue's June press release, ran through Wednesday, September 30. The fireworks finale with OneRepublic was September 11 and 12. Everything on the calendar since then is a lease event, booked by promoters renting the venue and run under a different set of house rules.

The bottle of wine that came out of the picnic basket all summer now gets turned away at the gate. The rule that allowed it is still in force on the other side of the 101. And the people living off Highland Avenue get the same concert nights they had in July.

Eighteen Dates Under One Flag

The Bowl's current calendar lists 13 lease dates in October and five in November, each marked "Special House Rules Apply." The lineup leans younger and louder than a Tchaikovsky evening:

  • October 8–11: Empire of the Sun with Polo & Pan, Mac DeMarco, then Jack Johnson with Hermanos Gutiérrez on two nights
  • October 15–18: Cynthia Erivo, two nights of MILEY: BASS PERSUADES with Model/Actriz, and SmartLess Live with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett
  • October 21–31: My Chemical Romance on five nights, with The Used on October 30 and Thrice on Halloween
  • November 7–21: Jimmy Eat World with The Format and The Linda Lindas, Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean celebrating 30 years of the Fugees' The Score, two nights of Jonas Brothers with All Time Low, and Steve Lacy

On its neighbors page the Bowl names its lease partner as Live Nation Hewitt Silva. It's the same amphitheater with the same shell, but the operating terms change at the gate.

What Changes at the Gate

The Bowl's house rules page spells out the split. At LA Phil-presented events, outside wine and beer are allowed. At lease events:

outside alcohol is not permitted. Wine and beer are available for purchase inside the Bowl.

The details go further. Factory-sealed plastic bottles of non-alcoholic drinks are allowed up to one liter. Glass is out, drinking glasses included, and so are aluminum cans no matter what's in them. Reusable bottles like a Nalgene have to come through empty, and there are water stations inside for refills. Bags don't have to be clear, but they still have to fit under the seat and measure no more than 15 inches wide, 15 high and 22 long. Lease-event bags are also checked at security.

The food rule survives the change. "You're welcome to bring your own food to any events at the Bowl," the policy says, with the same 15-by-15-by-22-inch limit on baskets and coolers. The October 8 Empire of the Sun page still welcomes food and sealed non-alcoholic drinks at the Bowl's 14 picnic areas. So the fall picnic is still possible. It just comes without the wine, the stemware and the glass-bottled sparkling water.

Getting In Costs More, and Rides Run Show by Show

Parking reflects the change too. On the Bowl's parking page, Lot D is $45 for LA Phil-presented events and $55 for lease events. Lot A runs $55 for stacked parking. Both lots are stack-parked with no early exit, and lots open three hours before showtime. Lot B is the Park & Ride and Shuttle hub, apart from accessible parking, and Lot C is the rideshare hub.

For lease events, Park & Ride costs $12.45 in advance or $15 at the lot. Bowl Shuttle is $12.45 in advance where offered or $12 at the lot, and it's free with a Metro or Metrolink ticket. The Empire of the Sun page did offer both. The Bowl also says lot locations, departure times and availability can change, and that service "may not be available for all concerts." In fall, the page for each show is the one that tells you whether a shuttle is running. After the show, Park & Ride buses load at the Highland Avenue transportation hub, and Bowl Shuttle buses leave from the top of Lot B.

The Bowl discourages parking on surrounding residential streets and warns that it can get you a ticket.

The BYO Rule Moved Across the 101

Down the Cahuenga Pass, the Ford keeps the terms Bowl regulars had all summer. It invites patrons to bring their own food and drinks to the theater or the picnic areas, and it allows all food and drinks inside the amphitheater. Beer and wine can come in. Hard liquor can't, unless it's bought from the Ford's concessionaire. Grounds open for picnicking 90 minutes before each show, and tables at Edison Plaza and Zev Terrace are first-come, first-served.

Hollywood Bowl, lease events The Ford
Outside wine and beer Not permitted; sold inside Permitted
Hard liquor Not permitted Concessionaire only
Outside food Permitted Permitted
Glass and cans Not permitted, regardless of contents Bags and containers checked at entry
Basket or bag limit 15 × 15 × 22 inches 15 × 12 × 22 inches
Pre-show picnicking 14 picnic areas Edison Plaza and Zev Terrace, 90 minutes early

One catch for anyone moving a Bowl basket over to the Ford: the Ford's limit is three inches shorter in height. A cooler that cleared Bowl security in August may not clear the Ford's.

The Ford's October lineup fits a picnic evening. It includes Punch Brothers on October 8, Jacob Collier on October 11 and 12, Iron & Wine on October 17 and 18, Julian Lage on October 23, and From Dusk Till Dawn and The Rocky Horror Picture Show on October 30 and 31.

Ten Nights With Shows at Both Amphitheaters

Lay the two calendars side by side and the busiest nights of the fall come into focus. On ten October nights, both venues have shows:

  1. Thursday, October 8: Empire of the Sun at the Bowl, Punch Brothers at the Ford
  2. Saturday, October 10: Jack Johnson; Bambu: Bass Building
  3. Sunday, October 11: Jack Johnson; Jacob Collier
  4. Friday, October 16: MILEY: BASS PERSUADES; MAROONS
  5. Saturday, October 17: SmartLess Live; Iron & Wine
  6. Sunday, October 18: MILEY: BASS PERSUADES; Iron & Wine
  7. Friday, October 23: My Chemical Romance; Julian Lage
  8. Saturday, October 24: My Chemical Romance; Music Beyond Borders: Discostan with Lifafa and Arushi Jain
  9. Friday, October 30: My Chemical Romance with The Used; From Dusk Till Dawn and The Rocky Horror Picture Show
  10. Saturday, October 31: My Chemical Romance with Thrice; the Ford's Halloween double feature

Halloween weekend stacks the most on the Pass. There are two My Chemical Romance nights at 7 p.m. at the Bowl, with cult films playing at the Ford on both nights. The Bowl says it works with neighbors and City Council offices to limit overlapping high-traffic events in the area, including the Hollywood Boulevard theater district. The Hollywood Partnership's calendar also has Screamfest 2026 at Ovation Hollywood starting October 7, so the fall run opens while a film festival is underway nearby.

What Stays the Same on Milner and Camrose

The lease calendar changes what goes through the gate. It doesn't change what happens on the streets. On select high-traffic nights, Milner Road at Highland Avenue and Camrose Drive at Highland Avenue are fully closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles. The Bowl says the full closure also pushes Waze, Google and Apple Maps to route drivers away. California law doesn't allow those streets to be limited to residents only. The Bowl offers a text-message sign-up that sends an alert on the morning of each full-closure day.

The Bowl works with LADOT to put traffic control officers in the area for every event, and adds more when it expects large crowds. Those officers work for LADOT, not LAPD. Some write parking citations and others direct traffic, and none of them are authorized to cite drivers for moving violations. According to the Bowl, its Park & Ride and Shuttle programs carry more than 200,000 patrons a year.

Sound is the one area where 2026 brought something new for neighbors. The Bowl installed an L-Acoustics L1 system this season, which it calls the first deployment of its kind in any venue. The system is designed to keep sound on the audience and cut spill into areas where it isn't wanted. It adds to measures already in place: sound monitors at every show, limits on extra sound systems brought in by performers, and modified levels for pre-show sound checks. October brings five nights of My Chemical Romance and two nights of MILEY: BASS PERSUADES, which will put the new system's spill control to work.

The neighbor ticket program is described in Philharmonic terms. The Bowl cites a longstanding practice of giving 4,000 vouchers to neighbors for Philharmonic performances, plus tickets given through adjacent neighborhood associations. It also says it has significantly increased the number of concerts eligible for vouchers, and it points neighbors to their advisory group representatives for details.

If you live near the Bowl, its calendar affects your evenings, your street access and the sound on your terrace, and the differences between seasons are the kind of detail a careful sale or purchase in these hills should account for.
